681 Families Adopted For Christmas

Sharing House reported today that 681 local families were adopted in the 2011 Adopt A Family program, which pairs needy families with generous community members who provide gifts and Christmas dinner.
Community members adopted 253 families, including 346 children, 299 adults and 118 senior citizens, according to Sharing House Administration Manager Angela Leopard.
Sharing House adopted 377 families, including 325 children, 582 adults and 41 seniors. Volunteers packed bags with presents for each family member and a gift certificate for groceries to make each family’s Christmas dinner.
Altogether, 1,825 persons were adopted in 2011. This was up from 1,425 in 2010.
“Adopt A Family is nearly as old as Sharing House,” she said. “Our community has a long history of helping families in need share in the joy of Christmas.”
“We are very grateful to the community for its continuing support of this and all our programs,” she continued. “This year was especially difficult, and Transylvanians really came through when it counted.”

Marion Latham, Sharing House’s food pantry manager, and Jeff Brandt, manager of the local Food Lion store, collect fresh meat for Sharing House. Each month the store donates about 10,000 lbs of meat, produce, fruit and groceries to Sharing House. The Food Lion Charitable Foundation just donated $5,000 to the pantry, too. Sharing House depends on regular gifts from local businesses, churches and community members to stock its pantry for Transylvanians in crisis. (Photo by Bill Harrah)
