"I have never had to ask for help before. I'm so sorry to have to do this, but my baby was born four months premature. For three months now my husband & I have been traveling back & forth to the hospital in Asheville. Our new baby has had numerous surgeries & bouts with pneumonia. My doctor has not released me to go back to work, & we are having a very difficult time making it on my husband's salary of $10.00/hr. The bills are mounting & I don't know where else to turn. I have a cut off notice for our electric bill, & this is our only source of heat." Anonymous.

Empowering the Working Poor
Transylvania Christian Ministry - Sharing House endeavors to faithfully serve all the Transylvania County residents with emergency crisis assistance regardless of their age, gender, race, or creed. The many individuals & families that typically come to TCM - Sharing House for help most often need food, clothing, or housing related financial assistance.
Most of the individuals & families coming to TCM - Sharing House for assistance are working at least part time or have a valid reason for not being able to work. Many of these people work for minimum wage without any benefits & they usually qualify for some type of public assistance including Work First, Food Stamps, Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid, & some form of subsidized housing. Many of these persons are single parents trying to survive on a meager income where any unusual expense can create an immediate financial crisis for them. When these same persons come to TCM - Sharing House many of them are depressed & desperately need an empowering hand up rather than an enabling hand out.
