Personal Testimony
"I came out of an abusive relationship. I knew what I needed to do, but I just kept running into roadblocks. Sometimes I would get very discouraged & depressed. If it weren't for my kids & the volunteers in the Family Partners for Independence program, I know I would have given up long ago. My family & I deeply appreciate the mentoring assistance that we received through the generous folks serving in Family Partners for Independence program." Anonymous.

Mission Statement
Family Partners for Independence endeavors to fulfill the biblical mandate of assisting the working poor by encouraging & facilitating covenant partnerships between local churches & low-income families in our community in order to cultivate compassionate understanding, mutual respect & self-sufficiency through relational mentoring, encouraging guidance, & practical assistance leading to greater equality in our community.
------------
Ministry Purpose
The Family Partners for Independence initiative is a cooperative partnership between the local Transylvania County Department of Social Services, Transylvania Christian Ministry, Inc. & numerous local area churches for the purpose of assisting low-income families with a support structure that facilitates the transition from low-income living to successful self-sufficiency & eventual social stability.
------------
Ministry History
In 1998, Transylvania Christian Ministry working in conjunction with the Transylvania County Department of Social Services established Family Partners for Independence in response to the Work First welfare reforms of 1995. For the first time in North Carolina, Work First recipients were required to actively search for employment while taking personal responsibility for themselves & their children.
The Family Partners for Independence initiative was established as a support structure for low-income local families making the difficult transition from welfare dependency to a model of working accountability & responsibly. Although Family Partners for Independence serves families of up to 200% of the poverty guideline, Work First participants represent the majority of families in the cooperative partnership.
The Family Partners for Independence initiative has served 40 families to the present time representing 46 adults & 86 children in a covenant partnership relationship with over 100 volunteers from 14 local churches in Transylvania County.
------------
Ministry Outreach
Family Partners for Independence is a faith-based interdenominational mentoring & support initiative for guiding & assisting the spiritual, emotional, & physical needs of eligible low-income local families in Transylvania County. Family Partners for Independence believes that local church congregations in the Transylvania County area have a wealth of professional & practical life skills which can be mobilized & utilized in fulfilling community service by assisting the working poor in society with a Christ-centered attitude.
------------
Ministry Strategy
The Family Partners for Independence initiative assists local church congregations in creating a small dynamic 6 member Church Faith Team who agree to establish a 12 month-long covenant partnership with an eligible low-income local family for the purpose of mentoring them on a regular face-to-face monthly interaction that leads toward achieving the goal of successful self-sufficiency. Family Partners for Independence will provide comprehensive training for the 6 member Church Faith Team in areas of Poverty Awareness, Interpersonal Communication, & Relational Mentoring, while being available on a regular basis for further advice and assistance.

Wheels-to-Work
The Wheels-to-Work initiative is a joint partnership with the Family Partners for Independence initiative attempting to alleviate the lack of reliable transportation which is one of the greatest obstacles to maintaining employment for low-income local families. The Wheels-to-Work initiative will match donated vehicles in reliable, road-worthy condition with eligible low-income local families who are participating in the Family Partners for Independence initiative. All contributions of donated vehicles will receive a tax-deductible receipt for the fair market value of the vehicle. Do you have an older vehicle or a second vehicle that you no longer need and want to donate?
