Food Drive Sponsorship

Food drives are a fun & easy way to support Transylvania Christian Ministry - Sharing House! TCM - Sharing House is a very important source of supplemental food for the working poor in Transylvania County. By hosting a food collection drive or running a financial drive at your church, school, organization, or company, you help TCM - Sharing House to continue to meet the needs of the many hungry families in our local community.

Here are some suggested guidelines to follow that can make it easier to plan your food drive in order to benefit TCM - Sharing House & our local community! The following steps & ideas will help guide you & trigger your imagination for other creative ideas to raise food & money.  If at any time you need help or have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact Linda McCready (Executive Director) at Phone: (828) 884-2866 or Fax: (828) 884-2573.

1. Plan Ahead Of Time

Select a small leadership committee from within your church, school, organization, or company to plan your food drive strategy and theme. Determine the start date & length of your drive.

2. Set A Specific Goal

Decide upon how many pounds of food you want to collect.  An easy way to do this is to set a goal for each participant & multiply this figure by your total head count. If your church, school, organization, or company has a competitive spirit, you may want to contact TCM - Sharing House to see if we have an award structure for the amount of food collected.  An award structure can be a helpful guide to you before you set your goal!

3. Arrange Food Collection Barrel Delivery & Pick-Up Dates

Arrange collection barrels or boxes & other supplies as soon as possible. TCM - Sharing House may provide the support materials (such as collection barrels or boxes, posters, flyers, or grocery bags) at no charge.

4. Get Leadership Involved

Encourage pastors, principals, leaders, or business owners to show their support by sending email, voicemail or letters. Have your church, school, organization, or company match individual donations. For example, your church, school, organization, or company might give $1.00 for each pound of food collected. Set up a day for pastors, principles, leaders, or business owners & their staff to volunteer at your TCM - Sharing House. Challenge a pastor, principle, leader, or business owner to perform an outrageous activity if your goal is met. Approach church, school, organization, or company leadership about becoming a TCM - Sharing House Food Drive Sponsor.

5. Promote Your Food Drive

Organize a kick-off event to build enthusiasm. Structure the event around your Food Drive theme. Create or obtain posters & flyers from TCM - Sharing House. Give out shopping lists of most needed food items. This shopping list can be acquired from this website. Display weekly or daily totals in high-traffic areas or announce the totals by using email to keep people adequately informed & enthusiastically involved.

6. Build Awareness & Visibility

Invite all Food Drive participants (of high school age or older) to tour & volunteer at the TCM - Sharing House Food Pantry. Please use our website to get information on the many needs in our local community & publish this information in your church, school, or organization newsletter. Include information about your Food Drive & final results in your newsletter.

7. Make It Fun & Simple For Others To Participate

Place grocery bags for collection at convenient locations. Hold an event (social gathering, sporting event, or concert) & charge a can of food for admission.  Sell "dress-down" or "casual dress " passes to church members, school teachers & students, organization participants, or company employees in exchange for donations. Hold your own "Canstruction" Contest by building the highest pyramid or ziggurat of canned food. Encourage cash donations.

8. Encourage Financial Contributions

Set a separate financial goal apart from the amount of food collected. Order & distribute donation envelopes from TCM - Sharing House. Encourage participants to make donations online.

9. Utilize Exciting Competitions & Creative Themes

Create competitions with lots of categories - largest individual donation, most protein, most unusual food or match your weight with the pounds of food collected. Have Macaroni Mondays, Fish Fridays, or Peanut Butter Day to further encourage donations of high protein foods. Encourage groups, grades or departments to challenge each other to a competition.

10. Celebrate Your Great Success!

Host a Food Drive recognition party rewarding competition winners with unusual food dishes & humorous food prizes.
